The Town and Country Quilters and The Laurens Women's Club Visit the Museum
September 13, 2014
This dress from the museum's collection was featured in both of the programs recently presented to the Town and Country Quilters and to the Laurens Women's Club. The quilters participated in a search and find activity centered around different fabrics in the museum. The Women's Club members listened to a program entitled Clothes Tell a Story which featured the stories behind seven museum garments.
By the way, the story behind this dress is a tragic one and exemplifies the hardships that early settlers endured. Mrs. Westerman from Sac County made this dress in 1892 while she was awaiting the birth of her child. However, she never got to wear it because both she and the baby died in childbirth. The dress was lovingly saved and the museum received it from the Westermans who later moved to Pocahontas County.
